Volunteer Spotlight
Featured Volunteer: Volunteers of the Month (August - December)
This year the local Red Cross has worked hard to serve the many communities within Central Florida. Our services would not be possible without the dedication and compassion of our generous volunteers. The American Red Cross of Central Florida would like to recognize these wonderful individuals as our outstanding "volunteers of the month" since August.Volunteers of the Month
August- Sissy DeMuth
Sissy was responsible for the beautiful renovation of our Bumby Avenue office lobby. Her designer talents and warm spirit created a modern and more welcoming entrance. Congratulations, Sissy! Thank you for your efforts that improved our spirits. We really appreciate you!
September- Laura Malone
Laura is a Disaster Action Team member who has also presented as a Speaker's Bureau representative for United Way, worked with the Valentine Rendezvous planning committee, and attended LevelRed events every month to support the Financial Development Department. Most recently, Laura has taken on the role of Orange County Coordinator for the DAT program. Laura has become such a driving force for Red Cross initiatives; we truly could not operate as effectively without her. Congratulations! Thank you, Laura, for going beyond the call of duty!
October- Sharon Pettigrew
Sharon volunteers between 30-35 hours each week at the Bumby and Traylor offices. She spends the majority of that time assisting in the HR department with recruiting, scheduling volunteers for orientation and following up with new volunteers. She was instrumental in helping organize two major functions, our September All-Staff meeting and the 90th Anniversary Celebration. Sharon assisted in developing the Procurement Team within our Material Support Services. She supported the IT Department by obtaining surge suppressors to ensure that all of the computers in Preparedness and Response were operational after their battery had died. Sharon also donated a wheeled-cart and a linen tablecloth for event display tables to make sure volunteers do not have to carry materials. Furthermore, Sharon has helped with donation requests for the Financial Development Department. Sharon came to us from California just six months ago and we are sure glad to have her! Congratulations! Thank you so much, Sharon, for the contribution of your time and talents.
November- Monica Potaczala
Monica is the driving force behind the chapter's Disaster Services Technology Team. In addition to teaching the Response Center Enterprise classes, she has overseen all of the RCE live sessions, when volunteers come into the chapter to answer phone calls. She has taught every disaster class at Rollins College with the exception of the client casework class to support outreach. Monica has mentored for the Avalon Park Rotary Club in the Inclusive Initiative program and has already led the club through most of their disaster training. Monica is very humble and nominated four of her own volunteers for this award, stating that "she was only the paper pusher." We all know that Monica's individual contributions to our chapter cannot be measured. Monica, you are the epitome of a Red Cross volunteer and we are all so proud of you. Congratulations for this award that you definitely deserve!
December- Christy Oberbeck.
Christy has only been a volunteer with the chapter for a few months. However, she immediately became involved and took the necessary training to be a co-lead for the new First Aid Station Program piloted during the UCF football season. She worked the station at these events, even with a cast on her foot. Christy is also a volunteer on the Procurement Team and is anxious to grow this new program. Congratulations! Thank you, Christy, for sharing your time and talents with us.
